Having Kate at SVAD was such a pleasure. I feel like I made real strides in my design practice with the zine I made at her workshop. It's funny because as I was making the zine, Marius came up to me to talk about my illustration work from last semester, and asked why he didn't see similar things from me in his Verbal and Visual Interaction course. I said that I've been having some trouble bridging my design work with the illustration work I love and want to pursue. After finishing my zine, I looked down on it and realized, it's the first thing I've made in college that was really marrying the two, and something that I was actually completely proud of.
Kate's style and workflow is just so appealing to me. The color of her risograph prints and the way her shapes overlap and blend with each other to create beautiful shades are something that I definitely want to try. Screenprinting and risographs are things that I'm really interested in trying, but I truly have no idea how they actually work. Her sketch style also really draws me in and reminds me of the stuff I used to do in high school, back when I was less inundated with typography and layouts, and instead just drew for the fun of it.
