Objective
Develop visual redesigns for the South Carolina House Legislative Oversight Committee, focusing on their email newsletter, PDF 1-pager and study reports, and potential visual ideas for website content. My team tackled the Executive Summary and Full Report, targeting usability and experience of the documents.
Getting Started
A huge part of starting this project was hearing from the client themselves. We had a meeting with some members of the Legislative Oversight committee and asked some of their pain points with the current documents. They placed an emphasis on making the summaries and reports more accessible so the general public could read them and understand the data they put out.
Solution
Fully customizable Word Document templates to increase accessibility, engagement, and usability.
Our focus was making these documents easier for the general public to read, and to accomplish this we:
-created a clear system of header and body copy fonts
-made it equally accessible in print and digital format
-cut down the words per line so that the document can be read more fluidly
-made clear exactly what this document contains through grouping and headings
All of these changes make it easier for the reader to scan through the documents.
Usability
We wanted to focus on the usability of the documents to make sure that the documents would stay consistent across each Report that is published. To do so, I added instructions to my documents that explain how to use and edit the Word documents.
Style Guide
Throughout all of our designs, we created and stuck to a style guide which was also delivered to the customer to create consistency and unity across all of their platforms.
Additionally, supplemental icons were given, and used across the project including email newsletter and the report documents.
